Q.1 What is Live Scan?

Live scan is a biometric technology enabling the direct electronic transmission of digitally scanned fingerprints to both the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, replacing the traditional method involving ink and fingerprint cards. This modernized approach facilitates the processing of criminal background checks typically within a 72-hour timeframe. Live scan technology may also be known as life scan, biometric fingerprinting, electronic fingerprinting, or digital fingerprinting.

Q.2 Why do I need live scan fingerprinting?

Live scan applicants must electronically submit their fingerprints to the California Department of Justice (CA DOJ) for conducting a criminal history check. According to California law, fingerprinting is mandatory for certification or licensure in the majority of professions. The CA DOJ exclusively accepts live scan fingerprinting and discontinues the acceptance of ink and hard card submissions. Live scan digital submissions offer the most secure and expedited method for processing background checks.

Q.3 I have undergone Live Scan Fingerprinting previously. Do I need to repeat the process?

Absolutely! This question is quite common. It’s typical for individuals to require live scan fingerprints on multiple occasions throughout their professional journeys. Many inquire about the validity period of live scan or similar queries. Live Scan simply refers to the electronic capture of fingerprints. Its purpose is to streamline the criminal background check process by the DOJ and/or FBI. The resulting criminal background report is then forwarded to the designated “Requesting” agency indicated on the “Request for Live Scan Service” form. This requesting agency is the sole entity with access to your personal criminal history file. If you change jobs or seek a new California license, you’ll need to undergo live scan fingerprinting again to enable that particular requesting agency to review your criminal background history report.
